Are You Hiding Your Gifts?

Christmas_gift_copyright_DoriStaehleIsn’t it time to stop hiding your gifts? No, I’m not talking about the ones you bought for your loved ones for the holidays! I’m talking about the gifts and talents you’ve been given but aren’t using.

Some people are quite aware of their gifts and talents. Others need more convincing. These individuals have no idea how far they can go with their gifts and talents, so they ignore them or put them on the back burner. Maybe they’re worried about what others will think.

How you know it’s time to use your gifts?

1) Thinking about doing what you love makes you nostalgic. You might even get misty-eyed. Maybe it’s dance. Maybe it’s wood burning. Maybe it’s accounting. It’s whatever floats your boat but you’re not doing.
2) Time stops when you do this activity. Maybe you haven’t given up your favorite activity but you’re doing it on the side. Do you lose all track of time when you’re engaged in this activity?
3) You’re filled with regret. Maybe you’re even bitter. It’s all the “woulda, coulda, shouldas”.

The missing ingredient

Sometimes we get deterred because we listened to the wrong people. It’s ok to get second (and 3rd opinions)! For example, I never auditioned for The Julliard School as a kid because I didn’t think my family could afford it. I didn’t know the Julliard gave dance scholarships! How stupid is that?! Maybe I would have gotten in or maybe not. However, I never gave it a shot, so I’ll never know.

How many famous authors and musicians were initially turned down? Plenty! They succeeded because they kept at it. The missing ingredient for those who gave up wasn’t necessarily talent. It was tenacity.

Getting knocked down or being deterred is part of life. The trick is to learn from the experience and move on. Like the great hockey player Wayne Gretsky once said: “You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.”

You were given your gifts for a reason. Isn’t it time to use them? Life’s short. The New Year is right around the corner. Why not write out a goal or a dream for 2015? Here are 3 more tips:

1) Write down the month in which you hope to accomplish it.
2) Write down who or what you need to accomplish it (This may take some research.).
3) Get started!
