Building Your Dream Team

Do you have a team in place to help move your talent or business forward? These could include a virtual assistant, a booking agent (if you’re a musician, singer, or speaker), a graphic designer, a web designer, social media or PR person, publicist, accountant or bookkeeper, entertainment lawyer, etc.

I’ve got a rather large network of contacts and with my podcast, I’ve gained even more. These are people I know, like, and trust and would totally recommend. From studio owners to videographers, to web and graphic designers, I’ve got people! How do I do this? I connect with people. I get to know them, check out their work and recommendations, and sometimes meet for coffee or lunch or meet virtually.

How to connect

I know this may be hard for all you introverts out there but it really pays to reach out to people, both online and off. Yes, I’m talking about networking! This can be very simple. You’ve got to keep your eyes and ears open and talk to people! You don’t need to pitch. Instead of talking about yourself, ask them a question!

Once you find out more about them and what they do, you have a better idea how you can help each other. Someone’s college kid might be looking for work, for example. He or she may have the skills to be a great assistant or is a great graphic designer. The person who designed my drumming logo is actually a friend’s daughter. I met a young web designer from Scotland on Twitter who specializes in musician’s websites. We had a nice chat, I checked out his portfolio, and guess what? He’s now doing the website for one of my podcast guests and is on my referral team.

If you’re going out and meeting people, for heaven’s sake – make sure you’ve got business cards! I’ve handed out cards at the store, the gym, where I get my car serviced, etc. I didn’t push my card on people. We engaged in conversation and they asked. Yes, even if you’re a musician or singer, it’s a good idea to have business cards. You can find great deals on sites such as Vistaprint.

Other team members

In addition to people who can provide services, there are several other essential team members. These include:

1) An encourager: This is the friend, associate, or family member who lifts you up when you’re down. He or she believes in you and your dream and can help you to keep going.

2) A coach, mentor, or accountability partner: Ideally, this person not only provides suggestions but also makes sure you stay on track and complete your goals.

3) Friends who help promote you! These are the people who love to share your posts and talk you up! If they’re a fellow musician, singer, or entrepreneur, make sure you reciprocate.
