How to Stick with Your Goals

Want to hear an amazing fact? According to a study out of the University of Scranton, only 8% of people who make resolutions actually stick with them. Check out this infographic! See that tiny sliver? That’s the 8%!

There’s another way that I can tell that few keep their resolutions. I just take a look at the gym parking lot. In January, it’s packed. By mid-February, the number of visitors drops off. By March, they’re gone. All these people are paying monthly membership dues but they stop showing up. What keeps someone like me going to this gym 3-4 times per week for 13 years while someone else only lasts a few weeks?

The truth about goal-setting

Believe it or not, it’s not the size of the goal that matters. It’s your mindset. I believe that resolutions don’t stick because most people don’t take them seriously enough. Many either set unrealistic or vague goals and then they sabotage themselves (like take an exercise class and hit the donut shop on the way home). Here’s another truth bomb: They do this because they don’t really believe they’ll hit their goal.

No commitment = 0 determination.

As for me, I’m not into exercise classes. I like doing my own thing. So, my workout at the gym is swimming 26 laps (52 lengths). Yes, I get a lot of Finding Dory jokes!

I wasn’t able to hit that goal overnight but now it’s so effortless, I don’t even think about it. At first, I could only do a maximum of 5 laps (10 lengths) without getting out of breath. As a former runner, to only be able to swim for 5 minutes was really embarrassing! Then, a lifeguard shared a great trick that I still use today: I swim the alphabet.

I think of words that begin with every letter of the alphabet until I hit the letter Z. It totally evens out your pace, so you don’t start too fast and burn out. Of course, you need to know proper lap swimming techniques (which I often teach others. I was on my high school diving team and filled in on relays.). I later added some extra challenges to prevent boredom and also to boost muscle tone. Working out is a priority for me, so I block out time on my calendar.

Swimming is great cardio and, like drumming, it helps with focusing and hyperactivity. Like many things in life, it’s all about finding your rhythm. Once you start achieving small successes, keep going! You’re now ready to set and achieve even bigger goals.

Just. Keep. Swimming!

To hit any goal, you need to make sure that you have:

1) A timeline
2) Realistic expectations
3) An action plan
4) Training (A coach or a mentor really helps!)
5) Accountability
