Are You Creating a Buzz?

Are you building momentum? Or still waiting for something to happen? I’ve been on this planet long enough to know that there is no such thing as overnight success.

I have to try not to laugh when I listen to a frustrated musician, singer/songwriter, speaker, or entrepreneur complain that they’ve been at this for SIX WHOLE MONTHS and they’re still not making big bucks. They don’t realize that they need to create a buzz – and pay their dues.


It’s a numbers game

As many of you know, I love working with young artists! One is talented young singer/songwriter, Caroline Dare. When I pitch her for bookings, I describe her as a young Taylor Swift.

One thing she may have learned from Taylor is the art of connecting with her fans and creating a buzz. Caroline posted a video recently on Facebook of one of her new tunes. Originally, I was focusing on vocal delivery and songwriting aspects of the tune. Both were really good.

What made my jaw drop was the number of views this brand new video has had so far. Was it 100? 500? How about over 50,000?! That’s unbelievable! Did I mention she’s only 15? Those numbers will make anyone in the music industry take notice. She’s building momentum and yes, big things are happening.

Caroline’s followers (as of this writing):

Twitter: 11,700.
Instagram: 8,630.
Facebook: 51, 889

Notice how her Facebook and video numbers match. This means that she managed to attract people to both Facebook and YouTube. Yes, there are tricks to this as well. Caroline doesn’t have 51,000 people seeing her Facebook posts (Thanks to the lovely Facebook algorithms that prevent people from seeing your fanpage posts.) but her numbers are high enough to get a lot of likes and shares. All of this is buzz-worthy.

What you can learn from this

1. People don’t magically find you. You have to work to attract them and you have to be consistent to keep them.

2. It’s a numbers game. The more people you have in your camp, the greater your chances of being seen, booked, or hired. It just takes a few strong supporters or “superfans” to promote you and create a ripple effect. People in the industry actually do look at the number of fans and fan interaction.

3. Persistence pays off. So does interaction. If something’s not working, don’t give up! Different platforms require different techniques. You don’t need to be on every social media platform, just where your peeps are most likely to be – and interact!
