Are You Feeling Blessed or Stressed?

Do you feel like you need a break? If you’re trying to grow your business or boost your career, it’s easy to get burned out.

If you’re feeling tired, cranky, stressed out, or scattered, it’s time to take a Time Out! Hey, it’s not just for little kids! I’m talking about the adult version. That means step away from your computer, stop checking your phone every two seconds, and take a break. It could be for a couple of hours or a whole weekend.

Beach therapy

I recently headed to Oak Island, NC for a women’s retreat with 23 other women from my church. Originally, I had no intention of going. It was the old “time and money” excuse. My friend and fellow band member Marybeth urged me to go. She said “You need to be there.”

I had no idea what the program focus was, nor did I know some of the women. I also had no idea why Marybeth felt I needed to be there. Imagine my surprise when I discovered the retreat program was based on a book by Bruce Wilkinson called The Dream Giver.

The retreat was a reminder that God gives you a dream for a reason and even if it’s something really unusual like using drumming for healing, you need to stay the course. If it feels like things aren’t clicking, keep the faith. As I mentioned in a recent post, what or who you need may not be in position as yet.

Learning to listen

Another way to gain clarity and yes, even hear God’s voice is through music. I brought a small drum with me with the intention of drumming (alone) on the beach during our downtime. Instead, I was asked to accompany Marybeth throughout the weekend as she led us in worship. I had no idea what she would be singing, so I just improvised. You just listen, find the beat, and jump in.

That’s a lesson for most of us. You need to listen but also be willing to take action. Marybeth sounded awesome! And I’m glad I didn’t stay home.

Clearing the clutter

If you feel like you need a break to reduce stress and focus but you can’t get away, here are some things you can do to clear the mental clutter:

– Doodling, drawing, or coloring
– Taking a walk and observing nature
– Sitting near water (Moving water works better for me.)
– Physical activity such as running, swimming, biking, etc.
– Playing an instrument (especially drums and here’s why!)

Time to bloom

What I’ve learned over the years is that it’s right when you feel the most frustrated and feel like giving up, that things begin to shift. It’s called “the breakdown before the breakthrough.”

I sometimes think God tests us in this way. Maybe He wants to see how serious we are and if we’re really ready. It’s like He’s saying “I gave you these gifts for a reason. Are you going to use them or not?” The Easter season is a symbol of rebirth. Maybe it’s time for you to finally claim your dream and your purpose. It’s time for you to bloom. The world is waiting.

Do you need some help or encouragement? Please accept this complimentary, 30-min. strategy session as my gift to you. Happy Easter!
