Are You Using Your Gifts?

Christmas_gift_copyrightDoriStaehleWhat if someone gave you an awesome gift but you never used it? You opened the package, you marveled at how cool it was but then you put it in a drawer.

Imagine that it was a beautiful, beaded necklace. You glanced at it and admired the craftsmanship but then ignored it.

You frequently make excuses for not using the gift like “It’s too fancy. What would people think?” or “I’m not ready to wear it yet. I have to get a new top to match or get my highlights done first.”

I see this happening all the time with women.  There is something really great inside of them but they don’t see it and they don’t use it. They procrastinate or let their perfectionism get the better of them. Some don’t feel that they deserve the gift.

Use it or lose it

Here’s a challenge for the creative types out there. How many times have you seen someone else’s artwork, jewelry, crafty stuff, graphic design work, or heard someone else’s music and thought “I could do better than that!”

Why didn’t you? The only things separating you and the person who is making money from their talent is initiative and follow-through.

I am equally guilty. I saw a painting in a store yesterday very similar to one I did many years ago. However, this one was on a gift shop wall with a very high price tag. Mine got ruined because it was left in a packing box too long.  Unfortunately, I got busy after the move to North Carolina and haven’t painted since. That was 15 years ago.

As the saying goes, “Use it or lose it.” The same applies to ideas and inventions. If you don’t move forward with them, someone else will. It doesn’t matter if you had the idea first. You didn’t act.

The Ripple Effect

Let’s imagine another scenario. You wear the beautiful necklace. You look and feel great. People comment about it. You mention the name of your friend and the jeweler who made it. You’re showing appreciation for the giver of the gift and its creator. You have therefore blessed both. Maybe others will go and buy from the jeweler. Now you’ve just created a ripple effect.

Your gifts were given to you by your Creator. Don’t put them in a drawer. Use them to bless others. If you keep letting life pass you by, then you haven’t truly lived.  If you have something you’ve always wanted to do, now is the time to do it. Imagine the possibilities!
