If you’re a speaker, a performer, a creative, or an entrepreneur, do you ever ask your clients or fans what they want? Do you ever check your stats to see what’s most popular? Or are you just throwing spaghetti against the wall and seeing what sticks?
Know your audience!
As a speaker and drumming event provider, I make sure I get as much information as I can about the audience before the event. I also like to know the theme of the event, the expected number of attendees, and the expectations. What results are they looking for? Do they want just a talk or do they want the audience to drum with me as well? This also determines the price and how many instruments I need to bring.
I also ask the audience questions at the beginning of the talk or drumming event. I may need to improvise a bit if the audience demographic, concerns, or experience level is different than what I expected.
Otherwise, it could turn out like that scene from The Blues Brothers movie where the audience started throwing beer bottles at the band because they weren’t playing country tunes! The band quickly switched gears and started doing the only country tune they knew.
Knowing when to pivot
Sometimes, the only way you’re going to know what your clients or your audience wants is to ask them! Doing a short survey is a quick and easy way to get feedback. I just included one in my recent newsletter to see what kind of content everyone would like and how they’d like it delivered. You can do this on Facebook and Instagram as well. It may be an eye-opening experience for you. You may have been putting in tons of hours producing video content but your peeps want to read short articles and blog posts. That doesn’t mean stop doing videos (These do really well on social media.). It just means that your newsletter subscribers probably won’t click on them if you include them (Most newsletter providers have features that enable you to see who clicked what or who didn’t even bother to open the email.).
As for me, I’ve pivoted plenty of times. As my life changed, so did my business and so did my target market. I’ve recently dropped a bunch of services to focus mainly on just drumming (events, lessons, and classes) and speaking. This may shift my followers quite a bit but that’s ok. At least I’ll know whom I’m talking to and what they’re most interested in. If they don’t get my Dori the Drum Chick vibe, then they’re not my peeps.
