This begs the question: Why do some people who are bursting with talent never quite take off while others with less ability soar? As someone who has worked with hundreds of local bands and solo artists, I have witnessed this first-hand. It also applies to solopreneurs and other creative types. So, what’s the deal?
I recently watched the documentary, 20 Feet from Stardom. The talent level of these backup singers was amazing! Yet, despite all of their talent and experience, they were never able to take center stage and branch off on their own. What was missing?
Success is determined by a mix of factors:
• A whole lot of marketing, branding, and promotion
As you may have noticed, talent isn’t #1 on the list. Actually, the recipe for success includes a few other ingredients:
• Willingness to make sacrifices
You have to believe in your dream and be so passionate about it, that others want to ride the train with you. You have to believe that it’s your turn to succeed and be willing to make the necessary sacrifices to make things happen.
Fanning the flame
You may not know how things will fall into place but you need to have a really compelling “why”. No matter what field you’re in, if you’re just reaching for fame and fortune, your flame will burn out quickly. However, if you realize that your gifts were given to you by your Creator and you’re supposed to use them to help others, you will be blessed in ways you can’t even imagine.
As for me, I have risen from the ashes. I now know I’m supposed to use my story and the healing power of drumming to help others who are hurting or stuck. I want them to see what I see: Talent, potential, and beauty. I want them to know they have a purpose and they don’t have to suffer. Above all, I want to help them find their joy.
Life’s short! It’s time to rock! I don’t have every single detail mapped out. I just have to be willing to step out and step up in faith.
