Becoming a Better Listener

How well do you listen? The truth is that most people “half-listen.” They’re either thinking of their response or they tune out and think of other things while you’re talking. Some people even multi-task on Zoom calls!

The art of listening has gone by the wayside in our fast-paced, overly-connected world. If you’re juggling loads of plates, it’s easy to fall into that trap. The problem is that you may miss the meaning of what someone was really saying. You may also try to jump in and solve the problem, thinking that you know what the person needs. But you can miss the mark entirely.

Hearing the “beat”

In business, in drumming, and in life, listening is really important. I can’t tell you how many programs I’ve created, thinking that it was what people needed. The problem was I assumed. I didn’t ask.

And let’s not talk about all the students who just wanted to jump in and drum but had no clue where the beat was or how to listen for it!

That’s why I include so many listening exercises in my private drum therapy sessions and group classes. I’m not trying to create world-class drummers. I’m trying to train people to really focus and listen. This skill is not only great for musicians who play by ear (like me) but it’s a great skill to have in general. This is especially true now when we’re having fewer in-person interactions.

Here’s a video I did that illustrates how I use these techniques and why. See if you can pass the listening test:

How about you?

In order to hone your listening skills, you may need to:

1) Unplug
2) Take a few minutes each day to take a few deep breaths
3) Listen to the sounds of nature (If you live in an urban setting, you may need to cue up a video on YouTube.)
4) Connect with God and the Holy Spirit and just listen!
5) Make eye contact and really listen when a person is speaking to you.

If you’re feeling stuck in your business, career, or life, it may be time to try something different. I have a few spots available for private drum therapy sessions. I also have a new group coaching program for women, based on my new book, Rise Up and Rock, which is now on Amazon.
