Clear the Clutter and Move Forward

Are you dealing with clutter? If your mind is on overdrive, this is a form of mental clutter, or “static in the attic,” as I call it.

I recently did a series of therapeutic drumming sessions with a client and, as usual, I mentioned that there are often positive side effects from the drumming. There is often a decrease in stress, along with added clarity, creativity, and confidence. One unusual side effect is the need to get rid of clutter. Clients often go home and reorganize a closet or their office, and they toss things out that they no longer need.

The drumming clears out the clutter in the brain, which in turn, results in the need to clear out physical clutter. It’s pretty remarkable and often happens after just one session. This time, the de-cluttering effect also hit me – big time!

Once I decided to clear some things out and donate them, I did feel much lighter and more focused. I got rid of 10 shirts, 2 paintings, & the bed in the guest room (which is now my drum room!). I also deleted 250 emails and switched around some things in the living room.

Opening the floodgates

Change starts with a decision and then an action. Just like with drumming, people have to be open. They have to first agree to try it and then they need to let go and let the rhythm take over. Those who resist are actually blocking any positive results.

This also happens in life. We hold onto things or we procrastinate. Before you know it, things pile up, you miss deadlines or opportunities, or the changes you meant to make never happen. Once you let go, you open up the floodgates for possibilities. You open up room for something better to enter in.

Signs you’ve got some clutter:

1) You feel restless or antsy.
2) You feel stuck.
3) You have trouble making decisions.

When you can’t stand the clutter anymore, you know it’s time for a change. Last year, I created a functional closet in my home office:

What do you need to let go of?

As an ADHD coach, I’ve seen some amazing clutter and procrastination. Some of it is because we just have too much stuff! Some people also lack of clarity and a system. Here are some ideas:

1) Email clutter – Read it and delete it. Create email folders for projects, clients, or things that are super-important. Unsubscribe from newsletters you’re not reading or getting any value from.
2) Create files, not piles! Physical and/or electronic files. I get file folders, hanging files, and tabs at the Dollar Store. There are plenty of ways to scan stuff and save it as well.
3) Does it still fit or bring you joy? This applies to clothing, decorative items, etc. We hold onto things that are no longer working for us. Donate it and pass it on!
